competition section of the festival are The Dinner, which features Gere alongside Steve Coogan, Laura Linney and Rebecca Hall in a thriller about two married couples who meet to discuss what to do about a crime apparently committed by their children; and political fable The Party, written and directed by Sally Potter, whose cast
includes Scott Thomas, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer and Cillian Murphy.
Announced yesterday, the 2018
competition lineup
includes the highest number of
films from female filmmakers since 2011 (17.6 %, three out of 17 currently announced
films), and the festival will play home to new works from Nadine Labaki, Eva Husson, and Alice Rohrwacher.
President Jane Campion and her jury
including Sofia Coppola, Willem Dafoe, Nicolas Winding Refn and Gael Garcia Bernal picked the prizes from this year's selection of 18
films in
competition.

FILMS Afghan Star (Unrated) Post-liberation concert flick chronicles the nationally - televised
competition entered into by thousands of aspiring, Afghani pop stars
including several women willing to risk incurring the wrath of the Taliban by appearing unveiled on their country's equivalent of American Idol.
The four Academy Award nominations it received
included two for Brooks, for his direction and screenplay, suggesting that the
film was in the thick of the
competition (Jones's score and Hall's cinematography were also nominated).
Whether Solo will be
included in the
competition film roster, which has yet to be finalized, remains to be seen.
To get the competitive edge, Lassard brings back plenty of ringers from earlier
films to help train new recruits for the big
competition,
including Sgt. Carey Mahoney, a glib, wisecracking lady's man played by Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith's towering Moses Hightower and Eugene Tackleberry (David Graff), the franchise's Rambo figure.
The male
competition the three women will be facing
includes Everybody Knows, the latest
film by Iran's two - time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi.
A psychological drama that registered with audiences and critics alike because of its heartfelt painful story, as this indie flick did itself proud in the award department in the Australian version of the Oscars (won 13 awards,
including best
film, director, actor and actress) and was viewed in
competition at Cannes and at a number of other
film festivals throughout the world
including the prestigious Edinburgh Festival.
In fact, festival director Thierry Fremaux held a meeting with the press before the festival even began to discuss some of the changes this year,
including the selfie ban and the new schedule which won't allow the press to see any of the
competition films prior to their red - carpet premier.
Nearly the entire line - up for the 2014 Sundance Film Festival has already been revealed
including the Premieres for narrative and documentary
films, the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight programming, and the official in -
competition selections.
