Film Festival this year, including Oscar
winner Nicole Kidman and Oscar nominees Annette Bening, Amy Adams and Emma Stone.
This was a minor disruption compared to the previous year, when the
festival was nearly cancelled due to a political conflict between the city and the
festival organisers, relating to the screening of an anti-government documentary in 2014.1 Much has changed in the past year, most notably the impeachment of right - wing President Park Geun - hye, whose government the documentary had targeted, and the election of the left - liberal party headed by Moon Jae - in.2 While the contentious political atmosphere has not entirely dissipated, as evidenced by the student protest groups still demanding an apology from the local city government, this year's
festival was an attempt to return to normalcy, despite the untimely death of one of the
festival's driving forces, deputy director Kim Ji - seok, a much beloved figure within the community.3 Although the
festival had a strong selection of international entries, including some of the best this year has to offer, such as Ruben Östlund's Palme d'Or
winner The Square and Sean Baker's The Florida Project, I have decided to focus my report on the Korean
films.

Kidman dominated the
festival with two
films in competition (The Beguiled, The Killing of a Sacred Deer — both
winners), plus How to Talk to Girls at Parties and the presentation of the television show Top of the Lake: China Girl.
However, the biggest
winner and my own top favorite
film of the
festival was Benh Zeitlin's Beasts of the Southern Wild, a tremendous piece of cinema (read my review) which is one of the best discoveries of this year's fest.
The international competition section does not attract a strong lineup, with even the
winners of the Grand Prize rarely breaking out beyond the Asian
festivals, and unlike Busan, there are few major
films from European
festivals.
Special Jury Prize was awarded to B For Boy director Chika Anadu, who accepted the award with great excitement and a shout - out to
winner Marques - Marce, proclaiming to the room that 10,000 KM was her favorite
film of the
festival.

I, Daniel Blake, about an ailing carpenter (stand - up comedian Dave Johns) battling Social Services for disability, screened early in the
festival and was warmly received, although plenty — including our own man on the scene, Mike D'Angelo — were quick to note that the
