number of films in this
category, moving from degradation to redemption, that are my favorite genre
of films, if there is such a thing.
Congratulations to OkCupid for winning
in every
category that they were nominated
in and matching the
number of Golden Globe Awards received as The Social Network
film.
Political Film Society rules require the
number of nominated
films to be reduced to five
in each
category.
The new question is will it be Oscar nominated given the strangely low
number of qualifying
films in that
category this year?
We no longer have 10 slots to back - fill, so if the Academy ends up with six or seven nominees
in the lead
category after voting, a
number of films (like «Bridesmaids») have a chance
of being left on the outside
of the race, looking
in.
There are any
number of possible explanations for this trend, most probable simply being the increasing split between blockbuster «entertainment»
films that dominate the technical
categories while low - budget (
in) dependent
films, driven by strong acting, directing and writing, dominate the more prestigious awards, making a 7 Oscar win relatively rare (
in order to reach that
number, a
film has to do well
in either the effects or design
categories, areas which favor big - budget spectacle).
While Denis Villeneuve missed out on a best director nomination for Blade Runner 2049, the
film did pick up a
number of nods
in other
categories.
Boasting sumptuous period production design, cinematography
in the irregular 2.0:1 aspect ratio by accomplished Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor, and a
number of Warren Beatty
films), and costumes, Café Society could get recognized
in some technical award
categories, even if it doesn't add to the long list
of original screenplay nominations (and wins) Allen has earned with apparent apathy.
While 12 Years a Slave and Gravity will certainly be heavy hitters
in a
number of categories, there are a couple
of other TIFF
films that could nab just one or two nods comes Oscar time.
That's what I'd call the top tier
of this
category, but there are a
number of other performances with their own champions, like Mélanie Laurent
in «Inglourious Basterds,» the
film's truest hero (make that heroine).
But Disney has three other 2012
films that have a great shot at being nominated (Pixar's Brave, Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, and the upcoming Wreck - It Ralph), especially
in a
category of five nominees, which requires the release
of a certain minimum
number of eligible animated
films.
