filming of the «Black Snake Moan» musical sequence, and another
on the
film's musical influences («Rooted in the Blues»).
The
single -
disc release includes a multi-part documentary
on the making - of the
film, a short sound featurette («The Sound of Terror»), cast and crew profiles, and a paltry two deleted scenes.
These are all nice additions to the material that appeared
on the
single -
disc release a year ago, but the musical performance extras are probably the best thing about re-buying this
film on DVD.
Concurrent with the release of its sequel (which makes Miss Congeniality look like fucking solid gold) and this
single -
disc reissue, the studio has decided to release yet another edition of the
film on DVD: a Deluxe Gift Set that bestows upon us a copy of the soundtrack CD.

The
disc opens with the wonderfully nostalgic, gorgeous The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the score that brought Legrand his first real recognition
on the international stage (with the whole
film featuring not a
single line of spoken dialogue, instead the whole lot being sung to his music).
The
disc also features six different radio spots, a
single TV spot, and a theatrical trailer (2 mins., HD) consisting mainly of the
film's money shots edited together, tail to head, with The Car's signature horn blaring
on the soundtrack: BEEP!
Whatever the deficiencies of the
film, its presentation
on Blu - ray courtesy of E1 in Canada (
single disc BD only release) and Summit in the United States (BD / DVD combo
disc) shows it in its best light.
As far as I can tell, this is the same video and audio presentation available
on the
single -
disc edition of the
film that premiered
on DVD last year.
On the other hand, TVA effectively transforms The Pianist into a Superbit title by devoting an entire platter to the
film itself (Universal has crammed both The Pianist and its supplementary material onto a
single DVD — Editor's Note: I have just learned that the Universal
disc is a DVD - 14, making this a moot point); the result is flawless compression, and the 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital tracks have room to breathe next to one another.
Ten years later, Criterion recently treated the
film to a new two -
disc DVD and a
single -
disc Blu - ray, its first release
on that format.
The
film's indie heartthrob status is further elucidated over the course of a nice array of bonus material
on this
single disc, housed in a regular Amray case.

Those disappointed that Warner couldn't make the
film fit

disc (as Paramount was able to for the equally long The Godfather Part II) may be glad to know that the Blu - ray does.
DVD Features: New Line would have been better off not even bringing this
film on DVD at all, but the
single -
disc release does include a 60 - minute making - of featurette, perhaps to explain why it took so long for director Terrence Malick to edit the damn thing.
