where LGBT youth form makeshift families — complete with house mothers and house fathers, who are typically not much older than their adopted children.
There are jump - scares that are more than just scares, as you'd imagine in a wilderness
where the flora and fauna have mutated like cancer cells (a metaphor made plain in a classroom
scene early in the
film).
The
film opens with the obligatory but mercifully brief happy family
scenes where Pitt's character, Gerry Lane, is established as a stay - at - home Philadelphia dad who doesn't seem to do anything more strenuous than make pancakes for breakfast.
Mr. Kingsley gets a big, chilling
scene near the end, and the
film comes full circle to a concert of the Schubert quartet,
where Paulina and Gerardo spot Miranda.
She is also cursed with the
film's very worst
scene where she wanders in a daze into the airport terminal, and phones her boyfriend long - distance, monologuing somnolently into a broken payphone.
In fact, the
film's most powerful moments occur when other characters show empathy toward the boy — most notably in a
scene where he is caught trying to dine - and - dash, and his fate is decided by a waitress.
But here is
where the
film blossoms and Celie finally gets revenge on Mister too (the
scene where Celie is shaving Mister with a straight sharp razor
where she is about inches from cutting his throat), along with other characters that blend into this movie.
Her vulnerability brings pathos to every
scene she enters, making you wish the whole
film could have been told through Rachel's bleary eyes — and set in England,
where she belongs.
