films directed by women at Cannes — just not in the Official Competition.

Woman - the original title of Lady Windermere's Fan - adapted
by Howard Himelstein and
directed by Mike Barker, is a much straighter attempt
at filming Wilde.
The
film's historical merits are greater than its artistic ones: It's Paramount first sound
film,
directed by Dorothy Arzner (the only
women to have a sustained
directing career
at the time), and the star is «It» Girl, Clara Bow.
But watching it is, distilled into a pure essence, watching the
film debut of one of our national treasures, Willem Dafoe, in a
film directed by the
woman who would next helm Near Dark, and of the man who would play the Cowboy in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive and serve as producer on Lynch's «Twin Peaks» and Wild
at Heart, which reunited him with Dafoe.
The
film is also written and
directed by a straight
woman, Eliza Hittman, a fact noted not long after its premiere
at the Sundance
Film Festival.

films at the box office were

Yet again it's worrying how few of these
films are
directed by women (just three), but
at least there are stories and characters among our choices that suggest that the 2017 nominees could — we repeat, could — be a little more diverse than the 2016 crop that inspired the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and campaign.
At the time, 14 percent of US Senators were female (the highest percentage in history), but for the top 100
films made in 2002, only 4 percent were
directed by women.
