One scene
in particular had me staring at two
film critic colleagues
in disbelief,
as if to say, «Is this really happening?»
I did not believe that this
particular conclusion would have happened
in reality, and while the
film played out
as a very realistic picture, that shift
in tone was jarring to me.
As the script begins to unravel the secrets of Miguel's ancestors, the
film gets bogged down
in its over-plotted family melodrama, with the last third
in particular feeling like the filmmakers are running down a narrative to - do list.
Many a tear will be shed among filmgoers
as the
film reaches its very touching conclusion, which means that, despite familiarity, we enjoy this
particular family, and are invested
in their plight, thanks to the quality of the characterizations and storytelling.

as the wife of a military man lost and presumed dead
in the 2009

As the tensions escalate, the
film provides juicy roles for both Hall and Bateman — the latter
in particular bringing to the forefront a side of his persona he's rarely shown.
Like with all indies, I expect this to connect with a few people
in particular, but I'm more than happy to introduce this
film to
as many people
as I can.
It does for me,
as there are images, pieces of music, and
particular scenes that have stayed with me over the years, and although I hadn't seen the
film in about two decades, it amazes me how much of it I still remember.
Despite the
film no longer being on Universal's calendar, that's not stopping director Guillermo del Toro from fan - casting the
film as he wrote on Twitter that he's got on
particular «Game of Thrones» star
in mind.
I'm not entirely sure why Peter Stormare was
in attendance here — his role seemed fairly innocuous,
particular compared to his character work
in more mainstream
films such
as Minority Report and Constantine.

in and reinvigorating the horror genre — many under the tutelage of Roger Corman, still others the initial products of formal
film school training, almost all the consequence of a
particular movie geekism that would lead inevitably to the first rumblings of jokiness and self - referentiality -
as - homage that reached its simultaneous pinnacle and nadir with Craven's Scream.
It finds
particular resonance with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is interesting given that Reynolds first appeared
as Deadpool
in that
film.
It complicates the
film's relation to history, so thinly veiled at times (Thornton's James Carville, Emma Thompson's Hillary Clinton stand out
in particular, but also Kathy Bates's conflation of Betsey Wright and Vincent Foster), but ultimately this is not a docudrama of historical recreation (like Oliver Stone's W. or the Jay Roach / Danny Strong HBO movies Recount and Game Change, let alone a fantasy of a Hawksian White House
as in its most direct descendant, Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing).
The movie set - pieces are stunning - the Gene Kelly-esque musical number «No Dames» (with Channing Tatum tap - dancing away admirably)
in particular is a total delight and easily
as good
as anything from the best 50s musicals - but the rest of the
film feels like an excuse to
film these short love - letters to classic Hollywood.
The
particular way
in which John and Beatrice Henderson occupy and control space figures
as much of the
film's vision of success and happiness
as its narrative and dialog.
Franco's ubiquity
as an actor, screenwriter, and director over the last decade has resulted
in an almost endless stream of bored, indifferent performances, often to the detriment if not of Franco's seemingly unstoppable career, then whatever
film he happened to appear
in that
particular month.
He began his career
in film criticism with a very positive review of Sylvester Stallone's debut
as a director, Paradise Alley (1978), which
in itself revealed something of Carax's

particular film, Burton suppresses much of the exaggerated eccentricity evident
in such prior works
as Mars Attacks!
The involvement of so many real musical luminaries (
in particular Aerosmith's Steven Tyler
in a key rôle
as himself, and Outkast's André Benjamin eating up his scenes
as trigger - happy gangsta Dabu) may bring a certain postmodern edge to the proceedings, but it also goes some way to explaining the
film's gently - gently approach to the record industry — an industry which would be unlikely to release its stars to a project that was aiming to score any real hits against it.
It's an exceptionally strange
film, somewhere between a yakuza thriller and a ponderous reflection on the violent childishness of the criminal mind — only finally getting its due when Quentin Tarantino stepped
in to offer U.S. distribution and certain themes began to show up
in weirdo crime flicks like Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog (which itself culled themes from Branded to Kill and Le Samouraï, the latter of which Beat cited
as a
particular influence).
