Louisa Buck, art critic and contemporary art correspondent for The Art Newspaper, discusses the process and challenges for private collectors to commission contemporary artwork, from the initial invitation to an artist to the financing and
the final installation of works.

Typically, they say, the two phases bump up against each other, with those in the build phase being rushed to complete their
work while trucks are lined up waiting to begin the
final phase
of installation.
(The title
work, from the
final year
of the
installation's time span, already helps break down any neat chronology
of Modern and Postmodern.)
Furthermore, it allows for this
installation of new and brazen sculptures and ceramics to feel much less
final, not that they ever really are, but we see that rather than considering the new
work as a declaration
of what is happening in Larner's
work right now, this show is merely a pit - stop on the long and winding road she has been charting for herself for the many years, and which will surely take another unexpected turn any day now.
Working with multiple materials to develop his sculptures and
installations, take a look at some
of the
final pieces displayed for the show.
Among the highlights
of the show are The Sun (1990), a floor
installation of 360 triangular elements
of white marble forming a grand circle, and the witty Self - Portrait (c. 1959) in which the artist's head is but a small ball
of paper resting on a larger - than - life wooden torso with incredibly elongated legs (both
works at Perry Rubenstein); the ethereal The Angel (1989) made
of 125 spheres
of thin clear Venetian glass delicately resting on the floor at Michael Werner; and at Mary Boone the five Concave Figures (1994), one
of Byars»
final works.
This minimal, concentrated quality extends throughout the gallery, in the mesmerizing placement
of the
works, which Hammons — who lent his help to the show in the
final weeks
of installation, cutting 10
works and making subtle adjustments — oversaw.
When the team re-created the
final installation in One
Work Gallery, they added the sidewalk component
of a long timber beam embedded with some
of the discarded elements, including one
of the curling pink cattle horns from Janka's opening assemblage.
The
final checklist for the exhibition includes a wide variety
of works by the participating artists, including textiles, sculptures, video
installations, photography, painting, and more.
The European Desktop is the third and
final work in a series
of theatrical
installations that grew out
of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen's performance with architect Frank Gehry for the 1995 Venice Biennale, Il Corso del Coltello (The Course
of the Knife).
Her
installations are characterized by a mix
of rigorous hard
work and playful, context - sensitive experimentation, in which the labor - intensive «making» (literally hundreds
of hours
of sheet - rock building, pneumatic stapling, ripping, shredding, and un-weaving) is ultimately subsumed into a

final body
of work was a five - part video
installation depicting the clinical and emotional processes
of a Special Ops military veteran's gender transformation.
The
final installation of our Athena Shrugged Series will feature the
works of Tatyana Fazlalizadeh and will run October 25 to December 16.
A
final retrospective
of his
work was held in 2000 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, with the commissioned site - specific
