In response to the open - ended question about gambling - related coping
strategies, the responses were coded under four major themes reflecting
strategies the participants used to cope with
family member's problem gambling: (1) financial control including taking over the
finances; (2) supportive
engagement including talking, rationalising, giving advice; (3) help - seeking including support for the gambler to attend counselling; and (4) avoidance and denial such as keeping away from the gambler and doing their own thing.
