Personally, I don't think it will take nearly 40 years to make
eBooks of all of the
public domain books, newspapers and magazines, etc., that are easy to
find, not to forget to add in music, artworks, etc..

As you may know, Project Gutenberg of Europe just celebrated the completion of their 400th
eBook, and I think you will be greatly surprised to
find out how many of these are included in the U.S.

To see if it's still alive at all, I poked around the major
public domain sites and
found the following: Project Gutenberg: I can't
find any
ebooks in PDF format on their site.
Public domain classics are the easiest books to
find in
ebook format, largely thanks to the sterling and visionary work of Project Gutenberg (and, more recently, the Open Library, which currently promises over a million free
ebook titles).
Public domain books and
ebooks — books that are absolutely free to download and are no longer under copyright — are a great way to
find fantastic books, from classics to romance to computer manuals.
From Google Books comes a nice selection of
public domain ebooks mostly in the classical literature genre, but you can also search Google Books or using the main Google search engine to
find all manner of
public domain ebooks.
If you've bought the book in the third - party ebookstore or
found the book in one of the sites that offer free
public domain ebooks, make sure to download the file in mobi format.
