Commonly removed before cooking, the research team
found that fish scales contain collagen that, when further modified and applied to mice, promoted blood and
lymphatic vessel formation, thus improving the potential for tissue repair and regeneration.
The researchers
found that the plasmalemma vesicle - associated protein (PLVAP), often used as a marker for blood
vessels, is expressed in lymph nodes not only in the blood
vessels but also in the
lymphatic vessels that transport tissue fluids.
They administered a foreign protein subcutaneously and
found that the foreign protein was transported to the cells residing inside the lymph node much more quickly when the
lymphatic vessels lacked the PLVAP protein.
Yet, no one has ever reported having
found PLVAP in
lymphatic vessels.

founding member of the university's Vascular Anomalies Group, a multidisciplinary team treating children with vascular malformations, hemangioma,
lymphatic tumors, and other disorders of
vessel development.
They
found that decreased presence of
lymphatic vessels and reduced immune cytotoxicity were more strongly associated with the metastatic process than tumor - intrinsic factors such as chromosomal instability or cancer - associated mutations.
