First, the existence
of substantial spillovers caused by
family problems such as domestic
violence would provide an additional compelling reason for policymakers to
find ways to help troubled
families.
At the same time, the same proportion
of those surveyed as a decade ago said they believed
violence exists within
families, according to the study, whose
findings were presented this month at a Chicago conference sponsored by the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect.

Life and
family events premigration and postmigration have been
found to have a profound effect on the health and well - being
of immigrant children.1, 2 Risk factors include trauma, separation from parents, nonvoluntary migration, obstacles in the acculturation process, 3 and children who immigrate in their mid - or late teens.1, 4 Research also shows that parents who have experienced or witnessed
violence have poorer mental health, 2,5 which is likely to affect parent — child attachment and negatively impact child development and mental health.5 Transitioning to a new country may be beneficial for both parents and children, but it may render new and unexpected constraints in the parent — child relationship (eg, children tend to acculturate to the new country faster than their parents), cause disharmony and power conflicts, 6 — 8 and, subsequently, affect the child's mental health.9
[134] It
found that gender imbalance in ATSIC's political structure was in part caused by insufficient recognition
of the role
of Indigenous women and matters that impact significantly on them (such as substance abuse, homelessness and
family violence), as well as inadequate leadership development and a failure to involve women in formal decision - making processes.
Findings from the NSCAW indicate that substance abuse was much more highly associated with «neglect, failure to provide basic necessities» than with «neglect, failure to supervise» or any type
of abuse.11 Finally,
violence may be more likely to erupt in homes where stimulant drugs and alcohol are used.12 The interplay between substance abuse and child maltreatment within
family dynamics and across children's developmental periods is gradually becoming clearer.
Under Georgia law, a court may order limited visitation to a parent who has committed acts
of family violence only if the court
finds that the visitation order provides adequate safety for the child and custodial parent who are victims
of the
family violence.
Felitti and colleagues1 first described ACEs and defined it as exposure to psychological, physical or sexual abuse, and household dysfunction including substance abuse (problem drinking / alcoholic and / or street drugs), mental illness, a mother treated violently and criminal behaviour in the household.1 Along with the initial ACE study, other studies have characterised ACEs as neglect, parental separation, loss
of family members or friends, long - term financial adversity and witness to
violence.2 3 From the original cohort
of 9508 American adults, more than half
of respondents (52 %) experienced at least one adverse childhood event.1 Since the original cohort, ACE exposures have been investigated globally revealing comparable prevalence to the original cohort.4 5 More recently in 2014, a survey
of 4000 American children
found that 60.8 %
of children had at least one form
of direct experience
of violence, crime or abuse.6 The ACE study precipitated interest in the health conditions
of adults maltreated as children as it revealed links to chronic diseases such as obesity, autoimmune diseases, heart, lung and liver diseases, and cancer in adulthood.1 Since then, further evidence has revealed relationships between ACEs and physical and mental health outcomes, such as increased risk
of substance abuse, suicide and premature mortality.4 7
One study that I conducted with several colleagues
found that males were more likely than females to report having witnessed a violent event, such as seeing a friend or
family member killed, while females were more likely to mention being the victim
of violence, such as sexual or physical abuse.77
In light
of this
finding, clinicians should carefully assess whether marital
violence in high risk
families may be compromising their therapeutic efforts.
The
findings support increased comprehensive mental health assessment for mothers who have experienced
violence, ongoing parental and
family supports, and the locating
of safe and protective housing.

Research has consistently
found that children who are exposed to
family violence have higher levels
of emotional and behavioural problems than children who have not.
Children
of all ages have been
found to have more problems when they have been exposed to
family violence, particularly coercive and controlling
family violence.
A recent survey
found that almost half
of the employees who had recently experienced
family violence discussed it with someone at work5.

A recent review offers ambiguous support for the relation between home visitation and reductions in child maltreatment.2 The
findings from several large - scale home - visitation efforts have shown disappointing short - term results in reducing
family violence and child maltreatment.4, 9 A 15 - year follow - up study
of the Elmira trial
families, however, provided the first evidence from a randomized trial for the long - term effects
