Keep in mind that mom's milk
supply will naturally and gradually decrease as
baby begins to eat greater quantities of solid foods — this is
fine and expected.
For some new moms, that works out just
fine, the
baby is born, he latches beautifully, the mom's milk
supply comes in, and everybody is happy.
When the mother's
supply is abundant, the
baby usually gains
fine, though he may spend long periods on the breast despite the mother's abundant
supply.
Feeding on only one side is
fine when your
baby is a few months old and your
supply is well established, but in the first few weeks and months, both sides should always be offered.
If you can only do some of those feeds, thats
fine, but the more frequently (not how long), you pump or bring
baby to breast, the more you are telling the body to increase
supply.
Some great indicators that your
supply is just
fine are wet / messy diapers,
baby is content between feeds, appropriate weight gain, etc..

baby is having enough wet diapers a day and is gaining weight then your
supply is most likely just
fine.

Mothers who feel they will only pump occasionally would be
fine with a manual pump; those who are going back to work and need something more powerful would probably require a double electric; mothers who have premature or ill
babies in the NICU, or an older
baby that is hospitalized and not able to nurse, would need a hospital - grade pump to simulate feeds the
baby wasn't getting and to stimulate milk production and
supply.
If you pump to bottle feed your
baby, that's
fine, but pumping just to store it can increase
supply causing more agressive letdowns.
Whether it's medically necessary because your milk
supply is low or your
baby is having trouble suckling, you're heading back to work and won't be able to pump often enough, or exclusively breastfeeding is just a bit too much for you to take on, giving your
baby formula while you're breastfeeding is completely
fine and safe.
