Step 1: Prepare your stool for painting by giving it a light sand with
a fine grade sandpaper then wipe down with a damp, soft cloth and allow to dry.
If you made any drastic changes you will need to use
the fine grade sandpaper now before moving on.
I also sand with a very
fine grade sandpaper to get a silky smooth effect.
Using
a fine grade sandpaper (about 120 grit) I distressed the piece quite heavily, concentrating on the corners and edges.
Then, using
a fine grade sandpaper (220 - grit), lightly sand over the filled in nail hole until it is smooth.

In the end, you'll want to be using extremely
fine «automotive
grade»
sandpaper.
Sandpaper is
graded by a «grit number» — the lower the number, the rougher the texture (600 - grit is very
fine, 40 - grit is quite coarse).
If a smoother texture is desired, finish sand between coats with a
fine -
grade (220 - 320) foam sanding pad or 400 - grit
sandpaper to improve smoothness and adhesion.
Distress the cabinet door edges by sanding them with a
fine - grit
grade sandpaper, if that's the look you're after.
Use a
fine - grit
sandpaper (
grade 220 to remove stains and 400 to smooth), sanding with the grain of the wood, before reapplying a finish.
