To mark the occasion, and to acknowledge that more than half of 2013 is behind us, I've compiled a list of
the finest film performances delivered by actors this year, at least until this point.
A Single Man Tom Ford's adaptation of the Christopher Isherwood novel, about a gay man grieving over the death of his lover, is a bleak, intelligent film that serves as a showcase for what may be Colin Firth's
finest film performance, the ultimate elucidation of the character he has been playing, in one form or another, for years: The man who feels too much to allow himself to show it.

Already a familiar face in world cinema thanks to

films as Open Your Eyes and Talk to Her, Spanish actor Fele Martínez teetered on the brink of international success in the wake of work for such internationally recognized directors as Alejandro Amenábar and Pedro Almodóvar.

film well worth your time if you've enjoyed the book or if you're looking for a finely crafted drama with some
fine performances.
