Conservation, fisheries enforcement and a shark
finning ban in the U.S. alone are not enough to conserve sharks.
The European Union has finally closed the loopholes in the EU shark
finning ban.
The law still allowed for the landing of whole sharks with their fins «attached,» so fleets began tying large fins to tiny sharks to get around
the finning ban.
One very pleasant surprise is that state officials, who are instrumental in passing important legislation (our panel included discussions of shark
finning bans, puppy mill legislation, outlawing pigeon shoots, protections for companion animals, and the intensive confinement of pigs), were extremely happy about being invited to animal events.
Since the formation of the coalition, «fins - attached»
finning bans, which mandate that sharks be brought ashore with their fins naturally attached to their bodies, have been adopted in Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama and the USA, while enforcement of the regulations in Costa Rica has been strengthened.

finning is another issue Ottolenghi has been passionate about for years and continues to support a federal
ban.

There is a worldwide movement to end the consumption of shark
fin soup, and Texas has just
banned commercial trade of shark
fins.
It proposed a
ban on importing cat and dog fur and shark
fins, and calls for tougher rules on puppy mills and animal fighting.
Though the State Party also notes efforts to establish coral nurseries, and the imposition of a
ban on shrimp trawling, the World Heritage Centre and IUCN are concerned over an apparent focus on conch and lobster, with little evidence that
fin fish, which are an important attribute of the property's Outstanding Universal Value, are systematically addressed in the identification and design of no - take zones.
An assessment found that the
ban on shark
finning does not affect the local fishermen's livelihood here and so they too are in support of the project.

Seventeen municipalities in Canada and numerous U.S. states have
banned shark
fin trading, but it continues to be a huge problem.
Sharkwater, and the «
fin - free» campaign that grew out of it, was a main driver behind shark
fin soup
bans, China's decision not to serve shark
fin soup at state dinners, and various companies» (Air Canada, UPS, DHL, etc.) policies against transporting shark

New York, one of the largest markets for shark
fins outside of Asia, recently joined seven other U.S. states in passing laws that

Ask the Japanese Prime Minister to stop targeting
fin whales and refrain from hunting humpback whales in violation of IWC regulation 19 (a), Paragraph 10 (d), which
bans the use of factory ships to process any whales except minke whales.
The IWC has imposed a moratorium on the hunting of 10 species of whales (blue, bowhead,
fin, gray, humpback, minke, pygmy right, right, sei, and sperm), and that moratorium only applies to nations who are members of the IWC and have not formally objected to the
ban.

A 2013 Environics Research poll found that 81 percent of Canadians support a
ban on the trade in products of shark
finning.
