While I'd rather pay an extra 12,500 miles for first class over business class, the reality is that Cathay Pacific is quite stingy with
first class award space in advance nowadays.
Well, given recent events, including Lufthansa no longer releasing
first class award space in advance, that competitive disadvantage isn't as major of a point anymore.
Korean miles are awesome for the best

United miles are still more valuable for travel to Europe, though not by a huge margin anymore, ever since Lufthansa stopped releasing
first class award space in advance.
Although some carriers don't release a lot of business or
first class award space in advance, they usually release at least a few seats.

But Lufthansa doesn't release
award space to partners further than 2 weeks
in advance (at least that seems to be the pattern the last few years) so there were no other viable
First Class options.
They told me they would not / could not honor the SWISS
First booking, but they could reaccommodate me on another carrier or
in another
class of service if we could find partner level
award space available.
Examining the calendar, there is
award space available
in economy
class on every day, business
class on most days, and
first class on just one day.
Though Delta isn't known for offering a generous amount of
award space to its partners, I was able to find four
first -
class award seats available
in August from Denver to Maui via Los Angeles and Seattle using the online
award search engine for Alaska Airlines, which you don't even need an account to use.
Specifically, four different flights have
award space in first class, business
class, or premium economy.
While it makes it easier to search for Singapore Airlines
award space online (United blocks it) it nevertheless prohibits
award travel
in first or business
class on Singapore Airlines on flights operated by the Boeing 777 - 300ER or Airbus A380 - 800.

Of course, purchasing miles when you know that
award space is available can still make sense
in such situations as it's usually cheaper than buying a

class ticket outright.

One of the best
first class experiences — if you can find
award space — is on Qantas, the primary carrier
in Australia.
Membership Rewards points were, for a while, the easiest way to accumulate miles
in some programs like Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer for better access to their business and
first class award space.
So if you're planning last minute or way
in advance you still shouldn't have trouble finding
space, but this isn't an airline that's always going to have business or
first class award space.

in June 2015.
Japan Airlines offers one of my other all around favorite
first class products
in the world, and they're pretty good about releasing
award space last minute as well.
This of course does not mean there will be any Lufthansa
First Class award space for the particular flight you want, just that you won't be able to book it, if available, further
in advance than that.

By late June, I see more
award space on the A380
in First Class, probably due to the second daily A380 frequency.
I took a look at
award space today through a week from now
in both directions on Cathay Pacific's five American routes with
First Class.
Award space is better within a week of departure compared to any other time that I've seen, and it looks like it's the only time you can book two people
in First Class.
In First Class, the
award space from London to Abu Dhabi is also wide open for the next week with
award space every day, denoted by «Miles 54949.»
Beyond this week, there are three other days
in the next three weeks with
First Class award space between Washington and Abu Dhabi, March 27 - 29.
Check out this week

And as you can see, several days that week have

As of March 8, there was no
