Many new knitters start with a basic garter stitch scarf as
their first knitting project because it's quick, easy and a project you're sure to be proud of when it's done.
The basic Garter Stitch Scarf is the quintessential
first knitting project, and with good reason.

For that reason, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a
first crochet
project (although I do believe a determined crochet beginner with some
knitting or crafting experience could successfully work this pattern).
The Garter Stitch scarf is a classic
first project, but here also are some other ideas for
knitting with Garter Stitch.
Garter Stitch is usually the
first stitch you learn when learning how to
knit, and it's possible to make pretty
projects with it before you even learn how to purl.
If you've never
knit with wire before, this is a good
first project because it's pretty easy, gives you lots of practice and is relatively forgiving.
Odds are good once you've
knit your
first project or two (and maybe even before then) you'll need to join a new ball of yarn to your
project in order to continue
knitting.
I've never been able to
knit a scarf, even as my
first project, as I get bored easily.
