The report found a «general downward trend» in the number and rate of
fixed period exclusions since 2006/07.
In 2014/15, almost a quarter (24 %) of permanent and
fixed period exclusions in English schools were due to physical assaults — 36 % of which were against adults.

The figures reveal that the number of
fixed -
period exclusions rose by 12 % last year, with permanent
exclusions up 15 % year - on - year.
Commenting on the data released today by the Department for Education on permanent and
fixed -
period exclusions of pupils during 2013 - 14, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers» union in the UK, said: «The increase in the number of pupils suspended due to assaulting adults in schools is extremely worrying.
Gibb added:» Today's figures show a slight increase in the number of
fixed period and permanent
exclusions, although overall they are lower than in 2010.
Instead, they must issue a further
fixed -
period exclusion.
Kirby said: «It is difficult to understand why
fixed -
period exclusion should be so much more necessary in these eight local authorities, compared with others.
Today's report says «persistent disruptive behaviour» is «still the most common» reason for
exclusion — and accounts for just under a third of permanent
exclusions and a quarter of
fixed -
period exclusions.
Secondary schools account for 83 per cent of all permanent
exclusions and 79 per cent of
fixed -
period exclusions.
The Department for Education's latest statistics show there were 302,980
fixed -
period exclusions in 2014 - 15 — an increase of 12.5 per cent on 2013 - 14 — and 5,800 permanent
exclusions last year (the equivalent of 31 per day) compared with 4,950 in 2013 - 14 (a 17 per cent increase).
For
fixed -
period exclusions more than twice as many were related to physical assualt on pupils (54,370) than adults (20,770), but when it came to verbal abuse / threatening behaviour, almost four times as many
exclusions related to adults (52,710) compared with other pupils (12,570).
The figure for
fixed -
period exclusion rose from 37,870 to 45,010, government figures show.
It also confirmed that schools would not be allowed extend a
fixed -
period exclusion to turn it into a permanent
exclusion, and instead would be permitted only to issue a further
fixed -
period exclusion.
