Personally, I tend to
enter flash fiction contests or things like informal forum contests where we're given a list of things / features that must or must not be in them.
We have everything from poetry competitions to awards for children's books,
from flash fiction contests to awards accepting entries from self - published authors.

Agent Janet Reid regularly conducts her
summertime flash fiction contest where she gives prompt words (usually in honor of one of her writers) and gives books (and the shower of glory) as a prize.
As you may remember, each monthly winner qualifies for an
exclusive flash fiction contest in December, where they will once more write a story of 250 words or fewer.
I learned a lot about technique from the WU
flash fiction contest last year, and I look forward to reading your posts, here in the coming year.
