Flash fiction differs
from other short written works in that it generally features a traditional
story arc — an evocative scene that doesn't have a beginning, middle or end wouldn't qualify, which is why it's a tough medium to tackle.
There's not always a clear
story behind my
stories, particularly my
flash fiction, but «Nadine's Broken Heart» began in my creative nonfiction classroom, after an extended collaborative exercise on the lyric essay (an exercise loosely adapted
from Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paola's Tell It Slant).
The variety in form,

flash fiction be considered and judged in a category separate
from the conventional short
story and its traditions?
Eventually you run out of excerpts or longer
stories to butcher and you're forced to do what you should be doing
from the beginning — seeing through the
flash fiction lens.
It's an apt metaphor for
flash fiction because these tiny
stories flow
from tantalizing glimpses that lure the reader forward.
As a repository of my
stories, it provides links to my

stories and novelettes for now.
