One of the oldest recognized breeds, the pug has
flourished as a companion dog through the ages, dating back as early as 400 B.C. Though the pug's background is a bit of a mystery, most researchers agree that the breed comes from Asia, due to its similarities to the Pekingese.
The breed's elegance and showmanship propelled it to heights
as a show
dog in pre-World War I Germany and, although its numbers there were decimated by the war, it has
flourished as a show
dog and
companion throughout the world since.
