People who have primary adrenal insufficiency and a confirmed aldosterone deficiency should undergo replacement therapy — typically with the synthetic
hormone fludrocortisone — to maintain the body's salt and water balance.
If you have any questions or concerns
about fludrocortisone or the condition it was prescribed for, contact your veterinarian.

Dogs are very responsive to treatment including a class of steroids called corticosteroids and a medication
called fludrocortisone.
There is a human oral medication,
fludrocortisone acetate (Florinef), that replaces both the aldosterone and the cortisol with a single drug.
Fludrocortisone has now gone off - patent and is available in less expensive, generic form.
Mineralocorticoids are replaced with either twice daily Florinef (
fludrocortisone) pills or monthly Percorten (desoxycorticosterone pivalate) injections.
