Sometimes, that
fluid can cause
fluid elsewhere
in the body to shift into the abdominal
cavity or the
lungs.
This increased pressure first manifests
in the vessels of the
lungs resulting
in the leakage and accumulation of
fluid in the
lung tissues (pulmonary edema) or outside of the
lungs in the chest
cavity (pleural effusion).
The chest radiographs may show an enlarged heart and / or
fluid in the
lung tissue or chest
cavity.
Most veterinarians will do radiographs (X-rays) looking for
fluid in the body
cavities, heart size, changes
in the vessels visible around the heart, and changes
in the
lung fields.
If there is any
fluid or air
in the
lungs, enlargement of the heart, air
in the chest
cavity, tumors, or fractures, a chest x-ray will determine if they are present.
This is a condition
in which the thorassic ducts leak, allowing
fluid to ender the
lungs and possibly causing them to twist inside the chest
cavity.
Cough, exercise intolerance, dyspnea (difficulty breathing), abnormal
lung sounds, hepatomegaly (enlargement of the liver), syncope (temporary loss of consciousness due to poor blood flow to the brain), ascites (
fluid accumulation
in the abdominal
cavity), abnormal heart sounds, death
Other tests the veterinarian will likely perform are radiographs (x-rays) of the chest and abdomen, echocardiogram (EKG), endoscopy, nasal and throat swab culture, and a fine needle biopsy of the
fluid in the
lungs and chest
cavity if necessary.
IV medication (i.e. antibiotics, bronchodilators, antihistamines, diuretics, mucus thinning medication), and draining of excess
fluid in the
lungs or chest
cavity will also be provided during oxygen therapy.
It is associated with the accumulation of
fluid in the
lungs (edema), the chest
cavity (pleural effusion), and / or the abdominal
cavity (ascites).
