Currently, you earn
UA frequent flyer miles based on the distance you
fly.
To put this into context,
flying Business Class from the US to Europe would cost 115K round trip if
flown on
UA metal.
If I can't
fly Business, I HATE
UA's 3 -4-3 or 3 -5-3 configs on their planes.
Just beware,
flying from Hawaii to the South Pacific or Asia does not provide a discount like it would on DL or
UA who both consider Hawaii a separate zone and have lower redemption rates to Asia and the South Pacific from Hawaii.
Because my company forces us to take lowest fare and I am allowed to travel Biz class on international trips, when going to Asia
UA usually has better schedule and prices, however they still won't status match a Delta Diamond who
flies average of 175k bis miles a year to win my business.
I find the post-merger
UA gives me so much more flexibility... I connected through IAH so many times the TSA guys would wave at me... now I can
fly non-stop if I want to... and the premium economy for those short flights is great.
However, unless you're an elite with American or United (if you are
flying on AA or
UA), you want to book your flight three weeks out, otherwise you'll pay a $ 75 close booking fee.
I guess I'll stick with
flying AA and crediting to Alaska until AA goes the way of
UA and DL and a revenue based program — and I have no doubt that they will and likely next year.
