UK - based toroidal drive company Torotrak has acquired a 20 % stake in
flywheel hybrid innovator Flybrid Automotive Ltd (formerly Flybrid Systems LLP)(earlier post) with an option to acquire the remaining shares before the end of the calendar year.
The automaker has answered that question with the Panamera S Hybrid along with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racecar that uses
flywheel hybrid technology and the upcoming 718 horsepower 918 Spyder plug - in hybrid supercar.
While most
flywheel hybrid systems spin their flywheels at high speeds, the FIVT flywheel spins up to the maximum speed of the engine, although it can potentially reach higher speeds under braking if the IVT unit has an input speed range greater than the engine speed range.
More recently, the firm's expertise has seen it develop
flywheel hybrid systems, as used in the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid, and work with Jaguar in Formula E and Nismo on the GT - R.
