The eye can no longer
focus light on the retina, focusing it instead just behind and causing poor close - up vision.
To meet demands for ever smaller imaging systems, researchers are working to create entirely unconventional ways
of focusing light.
The standard replacement lenses, however, can only
focus light from distant objects, unlike the natural lens, which changes shape to focus on different distances.
Located just behind the pupil, the lens
focuses light rays on the retina which can alter its shape and allow the eye to focus on objects at various distances.
For example, task lights
focus light in a particular space, rather than lighting the entire room, delivering more usable light and less light overall.
That's a downside because multiple lenses and complex controls are often needed to guide and
focus light with precision.
Camera lenses ca
n't focus light rays perfectly; points of light are rendered as spots on the image sensor rather than points.
Shades were designed to
focus light downward or spread illumination throughout a space, and were constructed with durability and longevity in mind.
