In contrast, given greater emphasis on the extended family, collectivism (Barbopoulos, Fisharah, Clark, & El - Khatib, 2002), and the responsibility for children to care for elderly parents in Egypt (Fadel - Girgis, 1983; Yount & Agree, 2004), we predicted that Egyptian participants would report higher ideal communal strength for maternal relationships
following marriage, and that women would be expected to provide greater caregiving within the family based on more
traditional gender roles.
