Too much of this and your dog will likely stop
following food lures, stop eating all together, or learn to approach things that make it nervous.

Once the dog has
followed the
lure through the initial stage of the movement pattern,
food is then released to the dog.
Once you have a
food lure the puppy will
follow continuously, you are ready to start the training.
In the cases of a sit, the trainer may use a
food lure and may initially reward the dog for just
following the tasty tidbit with his nose.
Now while he is in the sit, take another piece of his kibble and hold it by his nose and move the
food (
luring down) down to floor, the pups nose will
follow the
food and he will end up in a down position.
Other trainers use the clicker, but they do a lot of
luring — using
food or another object that the dog will
follow to «walk» the dog through the behavior to the desired effect, thereby removing the need or incentive for the dog to fully engage their brain and work through the behavior themself — and just use the clicker to mark the behavior.
