Currently most liquid biofuels are produced from food crops and yield low economic and environmental benefits compared to fossil fuels.

Why should we grow bio fuels from food crops if 1.2 billion people go hungry and why should these bio fuels be sustainable in any way if people die?

To date, food crops (corn, sugar, and vegetable oil) have been the primary source of biofuels for transportation, but increased use of these fuels has created more problems than solutions: rising food prices and food price volatility, and accelerated expansion of agriculture in the tropics.

Using so much of the corn crop for fuel for cars and trucks rather than for food has already caused world prices for corn to rise sharply.

Re bio fuel folley, 5 % of the world's crop land has been taken out of food production when food needs are growing, and put into growing fuel.

That is especially important if we continue to divert millions of acres of farmland from food crops, and convert millions of acres of rainforest and other wildlife habitat to cropland, for biofuel production to replace fossil fuels that we again have in abundance.

Even if the entire global fleet of planes is fueled by non food - grade coconut and babassu oil - as one engine was for a much publicized crew - only Virgin flight in 2008 - the industry would have to contract a lot of farmers to grow a lot of babassu on a lot of land that we just might want to keep for food crops.

From clothing, to food, to fuel, to a whole host of consumer and building products, not to mention helping in cleaning up soil pollution, it's only slightly hyperbole to call hemp a wonder crop:

Undoubtedly there are myriad problems with using food crops to make fuel, or using the land on which food crops are grown to produce fuel, but the answer to that problem is not simply taking the waste of another environmentally and ethically suspect activity and repurposing it.

Achieving an acceptable worldwide balance between food and people may now depend on stabilizing population as soon as possible, reducing the unhealthily high consumption of animal products among the affluent, and restricting the conversion of food crops to automotive fuels.

The Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) which released its comprehensive report on the current status of bioenergy today, says the conflict between growing crops for food versus biofuels is artificial and can be resolved if the United States, Europe and other rich countries drop protectionist policies and work with developing nations to increase the use of the eco-friendly fuels.

Continental says that it will be using «a special fuel blend including components derived from algae and jatropha plants — sustainable, second - generation fuel sources that don't impact food crops or water resources, and don't contribute to deforestation».
