On the
demand side of the
food equation, there are four pressing needs — to stabilize world population, eradicate poverty, reduce excessive meat consumption,
and reverse biofuels policies that encourage the use of grain to produce
fuel for cars.
Fueled by surging
demand from China
and other emerging economies,
and boosted by the convergence of
food and energy markets in response to American
and European incentives for biofuels, the worldwide commodity boom over the past few years helped trigger a land rush that precipitated the conversion of natural forests for farms, plantations,
and ranches.
Along with this is the growing
demand for grain as 80 million more people are added each year, as people in emerging economies move up the
food chain,
and as grain is funneled away to produce
fuel for cars.

According to a report commissioned by the World Bank, global
demand for
fuels made from
food accounted for nearly 70 % of the historic price spike in wheat, rice, corn,
and soy during the summer 2008.
With the increasing
demand for organic
food, housing
and environmentally friendly
fuels, Lopata saw an opportunity to promote organic agriculture
and give small farmers a way to remain competitive
and viable.
At a time when excessive pressures on the earth's land
and water resources are of growing concern, there is a massive new
demand emerging for cropland to produce
fuel for cars — one that threatens world
food security.
Despite some impressive local advances, the global loss of momentum in expanding
food production is forcing us to think more seriously about reducing
demand by stabilizing population, moving down the
food chain,
and reducing the use of grain to
fuel cars.

food prices trouble political leaders: Anger over high
food and fuel costs in recent months has spawned violent unrest across the world.
Depleting fossil
fuel reserves, depleting mineral reserves, widespread devastation of eco systems, depletion of biodiversity, acidification of oceans, dwindling fresh water resources,
food production to
food demand ratio becoming more acute,
and of course the primary driver for all of the above continued increase in the world's population.
We produce over 270 million metric tons of corn annually
and America is on it's way to a record corn harvest in 2008, second only to the harvest of 1949, at 14.5 billion bushels with
demand at only 12.7 billion bushels, proving there is enough corn for
food and fuel.
