Food aggression and resource
guarding are common in
dogs and is often resolved by feeding your foster
dog separately.
With sibling aggression, they lash out at other animals within the home, and
food aggression occurs when a
dog begins
guarding resources, such as
food and water.
Aggressive
dogs will
guard food bowls, toys, and certain places in the home.
It's not necessarily a copout to do this...
dogs learn through association, and if you eliminate the association of being aggressive toward the other pet over
food (with a combination of set boundaries and environmental control), then they will no longer feel the need to be so wary and
guarding in that type of situation.
Many shelters euthanize or restrict adoptions for
dogs that exhibit
food guarding while in the animal shelter.
Through my more than 30 years of professional training as well as my practical experience rehabilitating foster
dogs, I have considerable working knowledge of teaching basic manners and such problem behaviors as shyness, fearfulness, sensitivity to new things and people, aggressive behaviors,
food and object
guarding, out - of - control rambunctiousness, acting - up when seeing other
dogs, and the difficult age of adolescence, whether it be at around 6 months or 2 - 3 years of age.
Some
dogs might exhibit very little or mild resource
guarding, such as blocking or standing by their

guarding food or toys must learn that the owner's intent is not to remove the resource.
While it's technically possible to train a

food guarding issues to be comfortable eating side by side with another
dog, it's much easier to simply feed them in separate rooms or in their crates.

guards his territory and his family, may
