I have conversations with «ordinary Americans» all the time, and I find their opinions about the
school meals served
in the very
school where they send their kids, or where some even teach, to be
out of touch with the
foods, the variety and the quality of those
foods, offered each day.
I love the idea of swapping
out «grace» or «wiggle room» for «flexibility,» a word which has become truly toxic
in the
school food reform community.

out» really ought to take affirmative steps to help kids with no
food at all.
In our
school, they more and more frequently give
out junk
food — candy, bubble gum, licorice — as a reward for «good behavior.»
They call for boycotting the cafeteria, or bringing
in food trucks to sell to students
out in front of the
school in competition with the cafeterias, or even demanding that local restaurants be allowed
in to provide catering directly from the cafeteria kitchen.
