The decision was perhaps the biggest advance yet
for a movement that embraces not only vouchers, but also an assortment of new arrangements in public education, among them
charter schools, corporate management of public
schools, open enrollment, and other
alternatives to traditional
schools.
Institutional players — teachers unions,
school boards, and state and district administrators — frequently petition state leaders
for charter caps and reduced
charter funding and vigorously oppose
alternative authorizers and facilities aid.
And, despite the familiar assurances that the Common Core won't impinge on curricular or instructional freedom, it may very well pose grave problems

When I've asked what common curricula and creeping granularity might mean
for charter schools or other
schools that rely upon
alternative instructional models, I've thus far received no satisfactory response.

school accountability, it doesn't have to be the Common Core — aligned tests that states will be using
for their district and
charter schools (some of which also need «
alternative» accountability arrangements).

school leaders better training on how to manage their employees and get better results.

schools are often a coveted choice
for parents in urban public
school districts like New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford as parents search
for alternatives to their local
schools.
Thus the Washington
charters offer encouraging news
for those concerned primarily with ensuring that inner - city children have viable
alternatives to failing public
schools.
These include substantial spending to boost student achievement in urban
schools, networks of
charter schools as
alternatives in urban public districts, and academic benchmarks on standardized tests
for schools as well as students.

One key argument has been raised against the movement
for school choice: that
