for Black teachers, improved leadership capacity, and ultimately improved learning outcomes for students.
As part of an organization that advocates
for Black teachers, the framing of this question got our dander up.
Different people and cultures have differing reasons for leaving, but very often the high attrition rate
for Black teachers is due to school and school system culture, policies, processes, etc. that do not fully support them (Kini & Podolsky, 6/16).
We offer affinity - based and context responsive professional development
for Black teachers.
Perhaps black students are inclined to behave better
for black teachers.
For instance, while black schools had to be closed (leading to demotions or the loss of jobs
for black teachers and administrators), whites were given access to specialty schools or allowed to remain in their neighborhood schools.
The teacher who challenged the state of Mississippi in a landmark court case to win equal pay
for black teachers has been honored by the National Conference of Black Mayors.
Julius Hampton has been a teacher leader throughout last year and also showed up
for the Black Teacher Leadership and Sustainability Institute this summer.
And finally it's possible that black children perform better
for a black teacher, and are more likely to demonstrate how brainy they are in these classrooms.
