Yes Man is not much more than comfort food for those hungry
for Carrey's return to manic form, but the premise gives him enough of a playground to dish out his more benignly charming shtick to good success.
It's a perfect role
for Carrey who can obnoxiously overact to sell a joke to his heart's content and it works great in this context.
While certainly not much of a stretch
for Carrey to pull off, it does serve as a reminder of some of the things we enjoyed about Carrey's on - screen persona.
The problem is that director Forman and screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who memorably humanized Hustler publisher Larry Flynt in The People vs. Larry Flynt, do little to make the film appear to be more than a showcase
for Carrey's gift for reverent mimickry.
As
for Carrey and Daniels?
If you don't have a taste
for Carrey's brand of humor, don't even attempt this film, it's probably not worth the aggravation.
It's just that Forman and crew add nothing fresh of their own, and the film becomes little more than a series of rambling, indulgent performance pieces
for Carrey.
You yearn for Daniels to run back to The Newsroom, or
for Carrey to be interrupted by a phonecall from Michel Gondry, but it never comes.
With too much of one thing, and not enough of the other, A Series of Unfortunate Events offers only modest rewards
for Carrey fans and those who enjoy production design over story.
Oh, yes, and the answer to the question: «Dumb and Dumber To» is worse
for Carrey.
Still, whatever desperation there was
for Carrey to return to co-starring with animals («Ace Ventura» made him a star), he gamely gives his all, imitating Charlie Chaplin's walk (the penguins LOVE old Chaplin cartoons), impersonating Jimmy Stewart and taking a shot at launching another Ventura - like catch - phrase — «Yabsolutely!»
I have even more respect
for Carrey now and wish I could sit and talk with him about life for hours, as he has so much to teach us.
Hank seems like an easy stunt
for Carrey to pull while Charlie's fawn of a man is the film's unexpected soul.
As if that weren't enough stress
for Carrey, everyone else walks all over him too: When he tells a little girl to stop jumping rope in the street, she pays no attention to him (she also tells him off).
It sounds predictable, and it is, for there's not a single surprise in the whole damn movie except
for Carrey himself, who sells it pretty well even if this character is a bit like the ones from Liar, Liar and Yes Man.

for goofiness that matches
Carrey's own, and there are scenes between the birds and Mr. Popper in his sleek Manhattan duplex that are peerlessly silly.
In any case, the film, directed with bounce and snap by Mark Waters, stands as a comeback of sorts
for Jim
Carrey, who mugs and prances and does funny voices and manages not to be upstaged by a half - dozen flightless birds.
This is based on a 1938 children's book, and the mistake was placing it in a modern context as a vehicle
for Jim
Carrey.
