Determining whether individual
mutations are deleterious, or even
adaptive, would require functional analysis; however, the rate of nonsynonymous
mutations suggests that continued progression of this epidemic could afford an opportunity
for viral adaptation (Fig. 4H), underscoring the need
for rapid containment.
Even after the cells were taken out of microgravity
for up to 30 generations before being combined with the control strain, they maintained 72 per cent of their
adaptive advantage, pointing to permanent
mutations in the genes rather than merely a temporary adjustment.
The authors suggest that the
mutation might have had an
adaptive advantage
for modern humans, who migrated out of Africa into Europe and Asia beginning about 60,000 years ago.
«Despite the experimental data provided here, it is impossible to clearly establish whether the
adaptive mutations observed were in part responsible
for the extended duration of the 2013 — 16 epidemic,» they write in their paper.
Among other findings, SWIF (r) identified several
adaptive mutations in a set of genes responsible
for energy and fat storage.
