At some point we'd
like to create a system that could calculate a precise value based on
award availability, fees,
award levels and ease of accrual, but
for now these valuations are based on a combination of how much TPG would pay to buy points if given the opportunity, and the overall value I could get from redeeming them.
It looks to me
like Lufthansa has just recently released quite a bit of partner
award availability for travel from the US to Europe this summer in Business Class.
If you
like to travel during peak travel times, waiting until a couple of weeks or months before your travel date is a recipe
for not finding the
award flights or hotel nights that you want since
availability is limited.
If you already have a lot of travel booked and can't make the most of the
award availability that's around right now (and you're miles rich), then using miles
for upgrades may be a good idea — especially on routes
like Dallas — Hong Kong.
Though American charges a late booking fee and relatively hefty change fees, it has pretty reliable
availability booking in advance or close - in (except
for big holiday seasons
like Christmas) and incredibly low off - peak
award rates internationally, so your American Airlines miles can be more valuable than those of other domestic carriers.

On many of United's premium routes (routes that you may wish to burn miles on)
award availability is scarce and you simply won't be able to find the flights you want on dates that work
for you — miles aren't very flexible
like that as you're at the mercy of the airlines.
When I searched
for availability from the US to Auckland with United on Aeroplan's website, I found a lot of United
award availability for flights 5 + months out and decent
availability for flights only a couple of months out but it wasn't the kind of
availability I
liked.
If you can see that there's
award availability for a trip you'd
like to take then that's a pretty good reason to buy miles....
Like with all
award bookings, make sure you check
for award availability before transferring points.
If you're not sure where you'd
like to visit or if it isn't certain that the hotel you're looking at will have
award availability for the dates you want to visit then keep your money in your wallet and wait
for a better time.
Those aren't terrible prices to pay
for premium cabins on the
likes of JAL or Cathay Pacific but, once again there's no guarantee you'll find
award availability on dates where cash fares are higher than that cost.

like with the amazing Business Class
award availability which opened up at the end of May, the First Class
award availability I'm seeing is
for January — March 2017.

like to visit or if you can't see
award availability for the dates you want to visit then don't be tempted to buy points speculatively.
I guess I could transfer across some Starpoints to Elevate (the transfer ratio is 1:1) but I have those Starpoints earmarked
for a trip next spring... and it's not

Yes, there may be times when it's cheaper to book an
