As economists Roland Fryer and Steven Levitt showed in a 2006 study, the achievement gap
for black male students grows steadily from kindergarten into the early grades, and only gets worse thereafter.
Why might Success for All work so well
for black male students?
I have started a partnership with North Carolina Central University Royal Court as well as some of the Greek Fraternities to become mentors
for black male students.
We also find large effects
for black male students assigned to black male teachers.
The overall effect of race matching on discipline outcomes is largest
for black male students (Figure 2).

In Minneapolis, a concerted effort to recruit
Black males as teachers of an elective
for Black male middle and high school
students has led to a shift in belief systems and improved GPAs and progress to graduation.

These teachers have the ability to create examples that bring the curriculum to life
for students, and their own lived experiences can be used to help their
students (especially
black males) connect to and maximize learning opportunities.

black male teachers supposed to be role models
for students and somehow miraculously solve systemic challenges in education that fall far outside their control or even interests?

The impacts were much larger
for male students, and particularly those in poverty: Access to a
black teacher
for those
students reduced their dropout rate from 18 percent to 12 percent.

Black male teachers are low in number, as the majority of the teaching population is female and white; however, the presence of
Black male teachers is beneficial
for students of color and white
students alike.
The report describes college - related outcomes and other indicators that help predict college readiness
for Black and Latino
male students over time, and discusses key contextual factors that underlie these educational outcomes.
But Georgia, Louisiana, and Alabama weren't far behind, with young
black men accounting
for three out of every five young
male students suspended.

for policy changes that: support the recruitment, development and retention of
Black male educators; promotes a teacher workforce as racially diverse as the
student population it serves; closes the
student achievement gap; and advances high - quality education
for all.
And
for the seniors at Boys» Latin, it's a glimpse of a future that is out of reach
for the majority of Philadelphia public school
students, especially when those
students are
black and
male — a future lived in comfort and upward mobility, rather than one that stagnates with far fewer prospects.
