Climate change could
cause new hay fever misery
for millions
of people across Europe — according to a new report from the University
of East Anglia in collaboration with several European institutes.
«There is a certain ironic satisfaction in seeing a study funded by the Koch Brothers — the greatest funders
of climate change denial and disinformation on the planet — demonstrate what scientists have known with some degree
of confidence
for nearly two decades: that the globe is indeed warming, and that this warming can only be explained by human -
caused increases in greenhouse gas concentrations,» he wrote.
An extensive body
of prior research has revealed students have many misconceptions about
climate change, confusing it,
for example, with
causing acid rain and ozone depletion, as well as linking it to skin cancer, the authors note.
For these researchers, the bursts
of demographic expansion
caused by
climate change in southern Africa were probably key factors in the origin
of modern humans» behaviour in Africa, and in the dispersal
of Homo sapiens from his ancestral home.
Robert Watson, an atmospheric chemist at the University
of East Anglia in the United Kindgdom, is being honored
for his studies
of the ozone hole and work toward an international agreement to ban the use
of the chemicals
causing ozone depletion; he later chaired the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change.
«My view is that we don't know what's
causing climate change on this planet, and the idea
of spending trillions and trillions
of dollars to try and reduce CO2 emissions is not the right course
for us,» he told an audience in Pittsburgh, then advocated
for aggressive oil drilling.
Unfortunately, writes journalist Lois Parshley in her feature article «Catching Fever,» the common enabler
for the movement
of each
of these ailments is human -
caused climate change.
That «we can't say with assurance that human activities
cause weather
changes» and that
climate problems in Texas are best solved through «days
of prayer
for rain».
Dr Sue Ward, the Senior Research Associate
for the project at Lancaster University, said: «Peat is one
of the earth's most important stores
of carbon, but one
of the most vulnerable to
changes in
climate and
changes in vegetation
caused by both
climate and land management.
Plastics
cause problems in ecosystems when they don't break down and animals mistake them
for food, and they also affect
climate change because
of the millions
of barrels
of oil it takes to manufacture plastic bags and utensils.
The study, led by Dr Julie Jones from the University
of Sheffield's Department
of Geography, has revealed that limited data on Antarctica's
climate is making it difficult
for researchers to disentangle
changes caused by human activity from natural
climate fluctuations.
That principle, which embodies the idea that wealthy countries
caused climate change and are primarily responsible
for curbing emissions, has come to signify a sense
of fairness
for developing countries.
Thus, the data suggests that rising seawater temperature
caused by
climate change has buffered against measures
for the protection
of the Baltic Sea.
But thin - film solar cells hold the promise
of harnessing the sun's power in an efficient and sustainable way — and displacing the burning
of fossilized sunlight
for energy that is contributing
climate change —
causing carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
Again, green groups and scientists have criticized the commission's 40 % proposal as insufficient to limit global warming to a temperature increase
of 2ºC — which is widely considered as the threshold above which
climate change would
cause severe effects; Greenpeace,
for instance, had hoped
for a 55 % reduction.
If science can nail
climate change as a probable
cause of deadly weather events, like the heatwave that hit Europe in the summer
of 2003, then global warming becomes a matter
for product liability law.
But study coauthor Jon Hare,
of NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Narragansett, R.I., says that's not the case
for all fish:
