I will discuss this separately

different age groups, but the basic principles are,
of course, the same
for all
children: to establish a loving, secure, mutually satisfying relationship with a caring adult; to kindle or rekindle curiosity, the desire to learn; and to provide an environment which stimulates language development and intellectual growth.
The program originally developed in Elmira served primarily white, rural adolescent mothers (400 mothers, divided into four
different treatment
groups)
for whom data are available through the
child's fifteenth birthday.27 It was replicated in Memphis with an urban sample
of 1,139 predominantly African American adolescent mothers and their
children who have been followed through
age nine28 and in Denver with an ethnically diverse sample
of 735 low - income mothers and their
children who have been followed through
age four.29 Beginning in 1996, NFP programs began expanding to other states using a mix
of private, local, and federal funds.
Group parenting programmes have been shown to have a positive impact on the mental health
of children and parents in the short term.9 — 12 Positive results have been obtained from randomised controlled trials and other studies with parents
of children with clinically defined behaviour disorders, 9,13,14
children at high risk
of behaviour problems, 9,15 and to a lesser extent with normal populations.16, 17 They have also been obtained in trials
of interventions
for parents and
children of different ages.18, 19 The number
of trials carried out in the UK is small.13, 15,20,21 A recent systematic review concluded that these programmes are effective in the long term, 12 but most
of the trials on which this review was based used a waiting list control design, and as a result outcome data are not reported on the control
groups beyond 6 months.
There are three
different programs, each one targeting a
different year cohort, and each with a distinct developmental focus and a unique set
of activities
for children and parents / caregivers, relevant to the
age group, that help support meaningful family connection and
children's social and emotional development.
