I think rubbing your own breast milk on your
nipples and letting it dry is the best remedy
for damaged and cracked
nipples after trying that and a few
nipple creams.
A good latch will shield your
nipple from pain and
damage and produce more milk
for baby.
I have also see babies who didn't improve from having a tie cut and ones who had ties which were undiagnosed
for so long that their mother's
nipple were so badly
damaged that they couldn't breastfeed even once the tie had been cut.
Dr. Miriam Labbok, director of the Center
for Infant and Young Child Feeding and Care at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, points out that a child with a bottle will often hang on to the
nipple and hold milk longer in the mouth where the sugars can cause tooth and gum
damage.
Nipple piercings may also
