The first day of school is an exciting one
for you and child, but

parent of a child with

allergies it's also one filled with anxiety.
Staff were very informed and knowledgeable when discussing
food allergies and intolerances, which was a bonus
for us but would be a real relief

Each new school year brings new circumstances
for parents of students with
food allergies.
I'm sick and tired of people implying its the
parents fault - I nursed
for two years, introduced solids carefully, and we eat organic, and do high quality naturopathic vitamins - and my daughter still has
allergies to
foods.

How can

After multiple recent studies showing that feeding peanut - containing
foods to infants can reduce the risk of peanut
allergies, there are new federal guidelines
for parents about when to start feeding their infants such
foods.
As the NIH summary
for parents and caregivers states, introducing babies with severe eczema or egg
allergy — conditions that increase the risk of peanut
allergy — to
foods containing peanuts at that age can reduce the risk of developing peanut
allergy.
Peanut
allergies can be among a
parent's biggest worries, though we've had good evidence
for more than a year that when most babies are 6 months old or so, introducing
foods that contain finely ground peanuts can actually reduce babies» chances of becoming allergic to the legumes.
The district's policy will be reworded to explain that any
parent concerned about their child being exposed to certain
foods can contact the district and request allergen - free meals, which students can eat at a table reserved
for children with
allergies, District Supt. Sarah Jerome said.
And while we know that the development of
food allergies is a highly complex mix of both genetic and environmental factors, decreasing that risk would mean less children at risk
for anaphylaxis and more
parents able to breathe a little bit easier whenever they send their children off to school or to a birthday party.

for our needs.
What value do you find
for parents managing
food allergies in attending support groups?
Other
food allergic
parents may take a more laid back approach which can cause confusion
for a school administrator when you request more vigilant
food allergy awareness and procedures.
Basically, a
parent / guardian registers their student and their
food allergy restrictions and based on that unique combination of
food allergies, the system securely logs the
parents on to a «
parent portal,» where they can view safe options
for their child from the school's existing menu.
A school with outstanding

food allergies are «hogwash»!
When
food allergy parents learn to advocate well
for their child, they pave the way
for every
parent who comes after them.
Communication and education is key
for everyone, because managing
food allergies can't be the sole responsibility of the student and
parents (some kids are too young to communicate their needs, and
parents are not present at school or at all play dates and parties).
For those of us
parents of children with
food allergies, those statements can make us cringe!
And until that education is available, it's important
for school staff and school nurses to be educated on
food allergies and to ensure the allergic children have epinephrine at school, and that the
parents are directed to nationally recognized
food allergy organizations
for information and facts.
A school with outstanding

The paper does note that
for higher - risk babies (including those who have a
parent or sibling with an allergic condition such as atopic dermatitis,
food allergies, asthma or allergic rhinitis), the decision to introduce these
foods as early as six months may be intimidating to
parents, and suggest that
