food loss form a major part in the achievement of
food security for us, and in that light, this year's Crawford Fund's annual conference hit the nail on the head with regards to facilitating discussion and interaction on these
issues.
In case you haven't heard, the popularity of «Pulses» in the
food industry is dramatically on the rise, not only
for their nutritional benefit, but also as the leading front - runner to help solve global
food issues like
food security, drought protection and agricultural sustainability.
Reducing
food loss in supermarkets is an important
issue in terms of the efforts to increase profit in supermarkets, to increase income
for small farmers supplying to supermarkets, and to improve
food security in urban areas, as well as avoid environmental problems caused by
food waste.
By placing
food security issues into a context relevant to my life and study, this address allowed me to realise the very real opportunity
for me to create positive global change.
Attending this conference was certainly eye opening
for myself and gave me a broad perspective of the
issue of
food loss, waste and
security.
The major benefits of the 3 day - long conference
for me was gaining insight and understanding pertaining to international agriculture and
food security issues encountered in different countries of the world.
I would like to express my thanks to the Crawford Fund team and to CQ University
for the opportunity to attend this renowned conference, and to learn more about international agricultural research and the significant
food security issues that our world is currently facing.
By attracting the world's best speakers, providing extended question and answer sessions and opportunities
for informal networking, the Fund's annual conferences enabled participants to contribute and to place
food security issues into a context relevant to their lives and work.
Meanwhile, environmental and population changes have major implications
for issues including
food and nutrition
security, access to clean water and sanitation, and natural disasters.
I think this country's
food issues are so deeply flawed that each of these attempts at a solution are destined to fail unless shored up with adequate
food security, elimination of
food deserts in poor communities, the elimination of price supports
for foods that don't support our health, etc..
Security and theft are big
issues, and the dining room is just a big, scary place... If I could hope
for one change it would be
for smaller schools... it is just one solution
for a system that needs a lot of solutions and a lot of change... longer lunch periods, teachers willing to eat with the students, nutrition education, getting rid of the soda and snack vending machines that fund the sports programs, and more money and support
for school
food service programs...
As
food security becomes an increasingly important global
issue, scientists are looking
for the best way to maintain the organic matter in soils using different methods of fertilization and crop rotation.
