warming poles, shrinking sea ice, ocean temperatures) to the local scale (more intense hurricanes, more intense precipitation, more frequent droughts and heat waves) while also discussing the real causes (fossil fuels and deforestation) and the real solutions (replacement of fossil fuels with renewables, limiting deforestation, and halting the use of fossil fuels, especially coal and oil.)
I think there's an interesting parallel between this
issue and
global warming —
for many Americans (and most of Washington), climate change has been treated as an economic
issue — where costs and benefits need to be balanced.
Note the reference to the possible «countervailing effects» of particulates — and the recognition that
global warming could become a national security
issue («a natural
for NATO»), and of the need to «stop burning fossil fuels».
