Dumb & Dumber is a movie that is critic - proof, one of those
films that you can either love or
hate, depending on your attraction

I
hate to peg the
film's weakest point solely on the lack of pedigree of the director, but this far out that is probably the component that will draw most people's suspicion
for the
film's chances.
It goes beyond the fact that the trailers and logline
for the
film that we were all sold on totally misrepresent how the
film actually plays out, essentially spoiling the movie in a bizarrely indirect way that almost feels like the studio
hated it and was passive aggressively sabotaging it.
It's a special sort of
hate I have

Such stories need a gay best friend except that this
film's candidate
for that post - Patton Oswalt's career - defining Matt - turns out against the odds not to be gay, even if a mistaken assumption on exactly that topic led to a grievous
hate crime against him many years before.
The
film is tinged with odd humor, but it has a bit more weight, examining the love /
hate feelings Aussies have
for us Yanks.
We've seen modernized versions of Shakespeare in the past, with
films like Baz Luhrmann «s Romeo + Juliet, O (

for Chris Cooper (The Patriot, American Beauty), who might have one of the most intriguing characters of the
film, a person who
hates liars so much he's willing to kill to see the truth be told.
However, now one such
film has come along, and there is,
for whatever reason, a sort of eagerness
for it to fail, with people anticipating
hating exactly the kind of work that is sadly lacking in mainstream
film culture.
The extent of the
film's social satire is its democratic nepotism, with Grant having enlisted family and friends to provide the awful (non-stop) soundtrack and the
hate - crime performances, all of which are strung together in the sort of loose narrative (two families gather
for the titular shindig) that allows Grant to play both slovenly, gap - toothed protagonist Ringworm and his evangelical brother Snake.
Take away the love it or
hate it score (it's jarring, but in its own way, it almost feels like it's a character itself) and the long stretches of dialogue - free footage (again, the praise
for these scenes reeks of movie snobbery to me — five minutes is good, twenty minutes is puffed - up filler), and what you're left with is a
film that showcases the downward descent of one man.
All of this is to say that I am probably not the target demographic
for a
film that is being touted as a corrective to the 1998 Roland Emmerich Godzilla (which fans of the famous monster
hated, as did most critics), bringing the series back to its traditional roots, as director Gareth Edwards has claimed in interviews.
I
hated the decision to hold on Anne Hathaway
for entirety of her «I Dreamed a Dream» song — trailer
for film worked better with cutaways.
Possibly it was
hated for offering little in the way of hope (and in places explicitly denying the audience hope), or because at times you get the feeling the director is judging the audience
for watching his
film.
I
hate when Carter's honorarium «Dotar Sojat» is translated as Jeddak Tars Tarkas's (Willem Dafoe) «right arm» (another term
for «bitch» after spending the first part of the
film being called a virgin queen) instead of «the surnames of the two warrior chieftains whose metal I had taken.»
Of all the
films at this year's festival, none received more love /
hate than Brigsby Bear, so of course Sony Pictures Classics acquired it
for $ 5 million after a heated bidding war.
Meanwhile, things are going from strength to strength
for his actor brother Brian, who will join his former Love /

film.
