For this post, I interviewed OMRI's newest Livestock Review Panel member Johanna Mirenda to hear her thoughts about the issues affecting input products
for organic livestock production, and how these issues are evolving over time.

Recent developments and guidance from the National
Organic Program (NOP) are helping to make
organic livestock certification smoother and more consistent, but it has been suggested that OMRI could list more
livestock products in order to simplify the process
for certifiers and transitioning farmers.
Sales of
organic livestock products such as meat, eggs and dairy are growing rapidly, but the certification process remains relatively time consuming and complex compared to the process
for other
organic products.
The main experiments used to conduct this research are the Farming Systems Trial (FST)- the oldest continuous trial in the US that compares
organic and conventional farming systems, the new Vegetable Systems Trial (VST)- comparing the impacts
organic and conventional farming practices on nutrient density in vegetables and linkages to soil health, and Integrated Crop -
Livestock Systems using annual and perennial crops along with cattle or hogs
for soil, plant, and animal health.
For meats and dairy,
organic implies that the
livestock has been raised in a healthy, humane environment, with fresh air and outdoor access, no antibiotics, or growth hormones.
The role of
organic farming was recognized in other documents discussed during the week such as the «Sustainable agricultural development
for food security and nutrition, including the role of
livestock» and also in a promotion by FAO stating that «FAO promotes
organic, fair trade and slow food as concrete ways to support sustainable agriculture».
The rule, which was published and accepted in January 2017, would have increased federal regulation of
livestock and poultry
for certified
organic producers and handlers.

The national
organic standard in Australia has an equivalency agreement
for plant and plant processed products; however because ACO has its own standard, which is stricter, ACO certified products like wine and
livestock can also now be exported to Switzerland.
The committee includes several contacts
for each different sector of the
organic industry including grain,
livestock and vegetables (etc.).
Michael says, «During times of extreme climatic conditions
livestock may be agisted on alternative pasture; however under the requirements of the Australian Certified
Organic Standard
livestock must be bought back onto
organic land

organic status.

Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices rule would provide groundbreaking protections
for millions of animals on
organic farms, bringing USDA
organic standards more in line with consumers» expectations of animal welfare practices under that label,» said Matt Bershadker, President and CEO of the ASPCA.
The high quality of the Australian Certified
Organic Standard has earned equivalence with a number of international
organic standards, including the European Union,
for livestock and wine export, whereas Australia's national
organic standard hasn't been able to achieve this.
«Surveys show most consumers believe
organic poultry and
livestock regularly spend time outdoors, have fresh air throughout the day and have significantly more space than conventionally raised
livestock» reports Food Navigator, even though that's not always the case
for certified
organic animal operations.
For products not covered by this arrangement, such as unprocessed foods, agricultural and forest products, raw food and
livestock, QAI has partnered with Australian Certified
Organic to bundle Korean and U.S.
organic certification.
Horizon has been singled out several times by The Cornucopia Institute
for bending the
organic rules
for livestock care.
ACO is accredited to the South Korean
organic standard
for raw and processed food,

livestock feed certification and provides
organic certification in accordance with the Korean regulations administrated by the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
The reasons
for the lower nitrate leaching rates in
organic agriculture are the ban on mineral N - fertilizers and lower
livestock densities.
Again there are no statistics
for quantities of production; however, less than 1 percent of total United States
livestock production is
organic.
The proposal would amend the
organic livestock and poultry production requirements by adding new provisions
for handling, transporting and ultimately improving the living conditions.
Organic certification bodies and advisory services are finding it difficult to cope with demands
for inspectors and advisers — and down on the farm, managers, agronomists, and

organic farming expertise are all needed.
«All the Western states now are basically being scoured
for any remaining hay that's still there,» said Devon Pattillo, a
livestock certification supervisor
for California Certified
Organic Farmers, which inspects and approves farms that want to sell their food as
organic.
The findings also call into question other suggestions
for using titanium dioxide
for environmental remediation —
for example, to remove odor - causing
organic compounds from emissions produced by confined
livestock feeding operations.
In 2008, like all other conventional prices, the price
for organic feed
for dairy cows and other
livestock shot up so quickly — without milk processors and marketers paying farmers more to make up the gap — that
for the first time in history, conventional dairy farmers were making more than
organic (conventional milk prices were at unprecedented highs)!
One potential upcoming change in the area of humane treatment
for certified
organic poultry is the
Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices (OLPP).

livestock growers meet strict standards

organic agriculture on the current amount of land that is being used
for farming and
livestock production, then that system could produce enough calories to feed the world without requiring people to change their dietary habits,» said study team member Catherine Badgley, a research scientist at the Museum of Paleontology, University of Michigan.
