The journey of discovery reveals information that gives life scientists insight into evolution and which creates
opportunities for plant breeders and prospects for growers.
The legislation would introduce new
protections for plant breeders, including a longer term of protection, as well as a farmers» privilege to use harvested seeds from the plant varieties they grow on their own holdings to propagate such plant varieties on those holdings.
«Obtaining blue - colored flowers is the Holy
Grail for plant breeders,» says Mark Bridgen, a plant breeder at Cornell University.
And she says it's
important for plant breeders like herself to keep in mind that the traits they select for in plants — such as heat in peppers — might have disadvantages under certain conditions.
At the time the main
concern for plant breeders was pollen movement between different strains of crops — if a variety of sweet corn was contaminated by pollen from a popcorn variety, then the resulting hybrid offspring would produce seeds that were unusable for market purposes or for selecting new varieties.
The project is part of the USDA's focus on supporting research in plant breeding, genetics, and genomics to improve crops, identify and address threats from pests and diseases, and, create new technologies and
tools for plant breeders.
She says that, in the U.S. at least, there are already movements to encourage people who are currently growing cannabis plants to make their strains known in the public domain so that they're never patented or
registered for plant breeders» rights.
While most of the changes are procedural, such as deadlines for filing documents during the application process, some of the changes are substantive, for example extending the term of
protection for plant breeders» rights and industrial designs.
