for the UnConference in early November.
This sows the seeds
for an unconference.
The event attracted the attention of educators from around the world — not only for the excellent content and collaborative spirit, but also
for the unconference model itself — one that costs next to nothing to produce by facilitating ad - hoc community participation.
This experience sparked our passion
for the unconference model and inspired us to share the model with our colleagues in education.

Rather than sit through a day of pre-programmed lectures, we were all invited to suggest a topic
for discussion as is the case with
unconferences.

for traditional forms of professional learning — seminars, study groups, workshops, conferences, mentoring, coaching, and so on — but also
for «new» forms that include face - to - face or online professional learning communities, teacher exchanges, bug - in - the - ear coaching, data teams, individualized improvement plans, and
unconferences.
And the free, participatory
unconferences of Ed Camps — organized by teachers
for teachers — have focuses as varied as how to teach quantum physics with dance or how to engage in public / private school partnerships (Swanson, 2014).
A social studies teacher may participate in a moderated #sschat on historical thinking, use the #FergusonSyllabus hashtag to research how to talk with students about systemic race issues, exchange ideas with digital colleagues, challenge local or federal policy by contacting legislators or informing the public, or organize a face - to - face Edcamp

Infusing the Edcamp Spirit in PD
For a school working on revitalizing its adult learning culture,
unconferences hold great promise.
