In today's case (Henry v. British Columbia) the Court awarded the Plaintiff over $ 8 million in
damages for a wrongful conviction and some 27 years of incarceration.
The Rev. A. R. Bernard, a prominent Brooklyn pastor whose congregation Mr. Stringer recently addressed, said the comptroller talked there about his
settlements for wrongful convictions.

The Court of Appeal allowed the appeal, citing Hill v. Hamilton Wentworth Police Services Board for the principle that a plaintiff
suing for wrongful conviction (or in this case, wrongful detention) can not be held to have discovered the facts in support of his or her claim until there is a formal ruling or finding confirming the wrongful conviction (or detention).
The Supreme Court agreed with the $ 1.1 million payment for non-pecuniary damages but confirmed that an award of 3 million
dollars for wrongful conviction was too much for this case:

[35] While the allegations against the Settling Defendants and non-settling defendants were based upon different allegations of fault, the relief sought was essentially the same:
compensation for a wrongful conviction and some 27 years of incarceration.
In 2003, Avery filed a $ 36 - million civil lawsuit against Manitowoc County, its former sheriff, and its former district
attorney for wrongful conviction and imprisonment.
